Calhoun Street Soups, Salads & Spirits, in Depth

Permanently closed. Calhoun Street Soups, Salads & Spirits, the downtown Fort Wayne restaurant and full bar that nearly everyone called CS3, closed in August 2018. Nothing on this page is a live listing. There are no current hours, and there is no version of this room still serving. It is a record.

People still search for it, which is reason enough to get the details right, and reason enough not to pad them out with things we cannot stand behind.

Soups, Salads, Spirits, and the Long List Behind the Bar

The name told you three of the four things and undersold the fourth. CS3 sat at 1915 South Calhoun Street, in downtown Fort Wayne, and it was a restaurant and a full bar in equal measure. The menu centered on soups, salads, burgers, and other pub-style fare. Running alongside it was an extensive beer selection, the part of the operation the name never mentions and the part that placed CS3 in the same conversation as the city's beer-forward rooms.

That is pub food in the plain sense. A burger. A bowl of soup. A salad if you wanted one. Something on tap to drink with it, chosen from a list long enough to be the reason you walked in rather than an afterthought once you had. Nothing about that is glamorous, and nothing about it needs to be. A downtown block is better off with a room that does it than without one.

The Tiger Room

The piece of CS3 that made it more than a corner pub shared its walls. The Tiger Room was a venue attached to the restaurant, and it hosted live music, comedy, and other events. That is a meaningful thing for a bar to have. It means dinner did not have to end when the plates cleared, and it means the room had a second life on nights when something was booked.

A bar with a stage next to it is a different proposition from a bar. You can sit down at six with no plan beyond a burger and end up staying until eleven because someone was playing.

How It Ended

CS3 closed permanently in August 2018. Local news coverage at the time of the closing reported that its lease at 1915 South Calhoun Street had not been renewed. That is the extent of what is documented about why, and we are not going to improve on it with a guess.

The directory's own entry for the place is still up at Calhoun Street Soups, Salads & Spirits, kept for the same reason this page exists: a listing that quietly disappears is worse than a listing that tells you the truth.

If You Came Looking for CS3

You cannot go. What you can probably still find is the thing you were actually after, which was a full bar with a deep beer list and food that could hold its own next to it. Fort Wayne has rooms doing that.

Start with the brewery and taproom listings, which is where the beer-forward kitchens cluster. Hop River Brewing Company and The Office Tavern are both in the directory and both worth a look if a long tap list is the point of the evening.

None of them is CS3. That is the honest answer and the only one worth giving. What CS3 was, for as long as it ran, is on the record above: a downtown restaurant and full bar at 1915 South Calhoun, serving soups, salads, burgers, and pub fare against a serious beer selection, with a live music and comedy room called the Tiger Room on the other side of the wall.
