The Full Story

Don Hall's Gas House, in Depth

The name is not a gimmick. Don Hall's Gas House sits at 305 E Superior St in downtown Fort Wayne on the site of a 19th-century gas plant, and the building's industrial bones are the whole reason the place looks and feels the way it does. It has been serving steaks here since 1958, which makes it one of the older continuously running dining rooms in the city.

What people come for is the beef. The kitchen works with USDA Choice beef that is aged and butchered in-house rather than trucked in pre-cut, and that single decision is the reason to book a table. The prime rib is the anchor of the menu, and the seafood side of the operation gives the room its full name: this is a steakhouse and seafood restaurant, not one pretending to be the other.

What to order

Start with the beef. In-house aging and butchering means the steaks and the prime rib carry the restaurant's own hand rather than a distributor's spec sheet, and that is the thing a Fort Wayne steak eater will notice. Beyond the cuts, the kitchen leans into Cajun-influenced specialties, so the menu is not a straight-down-the-middle chophouse list.

If you want something lighter, the Gas House Greek salad is worth a look: beets, feta, mixed peppers, olives, and anchovy under a sweet-and-sour dressing. It is a real composed salad, not a token green side, and the anchovy tells you the kitchen is not sanding down the flavors for the timid. There are sandwiches and snacks on the menu too, which makes the room workable for a lighter meal and not only a full steak dinner.

Two restaurants, one building

Here is the part locals sometimes forget: upstairs is a separate restaurant. Takaoka Japanese Steak House operates on the upper floor of the same building and does tableside cooking, the hibachi-style show where the meal is prepared in front of you. It runs as its own restaurant, so a night at 305 E Superior can mean either the Gas House downstairs or Takaoka upstairs depending on the table you want.

The Deck in summer

When the weather turns, the property opens The Gas House Deck, an outdoor dining space on the bank of the St. Marys River. It is a seasonal summer setup, so it is not a year-round option, but it is the move on a warm evening when you would rather eat with the river in front of you than under the dining room's brick.

Who it's for

This is a sit-down, order-a-steak kind of night, not a quick counter lunch. It fits a date, a family table, or an out-of-town guest who wants a dining room with actual history under it. The Don Hall's name carries weight in Fort Wayne, and the Gas House is the group's downtown steakhouse anchor.

If you are building a steakhouse shortlist for the area, it sits alongside other Fort Wayne rooms in the category like Ruth's Chris Steak House and Eddie Merlot's, or Amore Italian Steak & Seafood if you want the steak-and-seafood pairing under one roof.
